John DOWSETT was probably born around 1685 and although I haven't as yet discovered anything else about him other than that he had at least two sons, I do know they lived in Bishopsgate at this time.
The eldest son, Jonathan, was to hand down the tradition of calling each eldest son by the name of Jonathan for several generations. This certainly made researching the name difficult at times especially when more than one generation were living in the same house at the same time.
From Bishopsgate they moved to Bethnal Green and then to Shoreditch where the centre of weaving was greatest. Most of the Dowsetts were weavers and some even belonged to the weavers guild.
