Hammerwich and Morris Dancing
Probably the greatest claim to fame which the village of Hammerwich has today is the naming of a very well known, and violent, Morris dance after it. The dance is said to commemorate the time in 1262 when " a certain heath was burned by the villeins of Hammerwich to the injury of the King's game." The 'vandals' from Hammerwich, it appears, cleared the area which has since been developed into the town of Burntwood of which the parish of Hammerwich now forms a part. A nice story, if based on thin historical evidence. The morris dance is part of the Lichfield tradition and is popular across the world. There are three morris 'sides' in Lichfield.
