Lewis's Topographical Dictionary of Wales, ed. 1833, says, A chapel of ease to the mother church [Steynton], dedicated to St. Catherine, is situated at the eastern extremity of the street fronting the haven: it was erected chiefly at the expense of the Hon. Charles Francis Greville, lord of the manor, and was consecrated for divine service in the year 1808 . . . . . A little to the east of the present edifice are the remains of an ancient chapel, which was also dedicated to St. Catherine, and, after having been desecrated for many years, was converted into a powder magazine: it consisted of a nave and chancel, with a finely vaulted roof, which is still [1833] entire: the western end has fallen down, but the boundaries of the ancient cemetery may he distinctly traced.'---Paroch. Wall.

The rectory of Johnston was probably united to the vicarage of Steynton in the 17th century, at all events all the incumbents of Steynton subsequent to and inclusive of the vicar for 1663 have also held, the rectory of Johnston. For vicars of Steynton subsequent to 1663, see under Johnston, Vol. II., p. 212.
On 24 July, 1882, a faculty was granted for the restoration of the parish church.
