Parish of Haroldston St Issells.

Please Note that this site is still under construction.

The parish of Haroldston St. Issells lies within the Hundred of Rhos.

It has borders with three other parishes, all within the same Hundred.

These are Freystrop, Johnston and Haverfordwest St. Thomas.

The Parish Registers are understood to commence from 1753.

Haroldston (St Issells) – St. Ishmael.

This benefice was one of the churches appropriated to the Priory of St. Thomas, Haverfordwest. In 1291, described as Ecclesia Ville Haraldi juxta Haverford' this church was assessed for tenths to the King at £2, the amount payable being 4s (£0.20).---Taxatio

There is no detailed description or separate valuation given of it in the Valor Eccl., but the yearly value of it and St. Thomas, Haverfordwest, is stated to be £11.

On the state of this church in 1594 we get some interesting light from an entry in Owen's Pem., which translated into English, says :--- "Haroldston alias St. Ishmells. The church in ruins, and there are no inhabitants save in Haroldston; lately bought by Sir John Perot, and was parcel of the Priory of Haverfordwest".

Under the heading ' Not in Charge ':---East Haroldston alias St. Issell's Cur. (St. Ishmael). Lord Milford. £5 certified value.---Bacon's Liber Regis.
