Pembrokeshire Roots

I spent many years thinking about my family, who they were and where did they originate? I had always thought of myself as a Pembroke boy since I had lived in that town, from an early age, until I was 15 years old when I left to join the Royal Navy. Everything I had done to date had centred around Pembroke but in 1996, when on the front cover of a computer magazine, there appeared a shareware computer program called Kith & Kin, I just had to try it out and see how far I could go back in time. I already knew a little of my mother’s family since her mother and father were still alive well into the 1970’s. I knew that her mother’s maiden name was Arthur and that she was born on 26th December 1901 but nothing else. Then someone in the Shetland Islands had phoned up, with a work-related problem and after solving the problem, we talked about hobbies. We both had a copy of the family tree program but he was more advanced than myself and was able to give me a few pointers on where to look. He suggested that I try the Family History Shop at 164 King Street, Aberdeen as they had a lot of relevant information. I wondered about this since Aberdeen is of course in the northeast of Scotland and my roots are firmly southwest Wales! However, try I did and with expert advise from the friendly shop staff, all volunteers of the Aberdeen & North East of Scotland Family History Society, I was hooked! After obtaining one or two birth certificates of various family members, I came to realise that I was not a Pembroke boy but the family had originated in north Pembrokeshire, the Welsh that is in me! My own father was born in Tenby and his father born in Bletherston (mid Pembrokeshire)! The result of which is this attempt at explaining not only my roots but also of Barbara, my wife, hence ‘The Scottish Connection’.
