The Turriff Cup
After many years away from its rightful home, the Turriff Cup returned to Gordon Park, or more specifically Scott Middleton's house!
Dateline: 26th august 2001
Venue: Allan Park, Cults
Opposition: Banchory CC
We started badly losing four wickets for 27. Ken Montgomery(6), Dave Hancock (2), Brett Howard (5) and Jon Barrett (6) all let themselves down on the day. But that would take too much away from the good tight line bowling of Craig Mason who had wonderful figures of 7 overs, 4 maidens, 3 wickets for 8. Malcolm Elder helped us a little with wayward bowling. But the heroes of the day??? Well ask Scott, he proclaimed himself man of the match. Andy Parks, 29, Steve Anderson 24, Colin Addison,11 all pitched in to help the score move on. Scott did hit some beautiful belligerent fours in his innings of 49 and this was batting with a handicap.....Andy Parks! After much debate with Neil Gourlay, Scott finally got his runner when Parky was out. Re-enter Parky. Parky and Addison ran around like whirling dervishes as Scott stroked the ball to all parts. Parky couldn't run fast enough and Scott was ran out standing at square leg! An innings with 8 fours and arrogant stroke making was a pleasure to watch. Ellon scraped to 164 all out with three overs spare.
Could the Boys win???
Well good bowling from Colin Addison (8-2-21-1) and Anderson (5-0-25-1) started off thinking they could. Colin in venomous mood bowled Elder for nought in his first over and bowled a decent line in his allotted eight overs. Steve wasn't so hot and was replaced by Ken Montgomery who took out Potter with an in swinger. Still tight, 71 for 3 at halfway was a worry, Neil Gourlay still there was a worry, but great ground fielding kept Ellon in the game.
Ken Montgomery finished his spell with 1 for 27 and Jon Barrett bowled well in his spell to pick up 2 for 22. Parky took over from JB and nearly had the dangerous Gourlay caught twice in the same over. Brett Howard unfortunately could not hang on to the two well driven shots in three balls. Much to his relief Parky bowled him in the next over, negating the use for fielders. Parky finished with 1 for 23. Brett himself bowled well for 2 for 40.
The game was getting really tight with seven runs per over required off three. Time for some great fielding. Steve Anderson came on to bowl the last over with Banchory 159 for 7. They needed just five to win. Two great dot balls to start with and a wonderful catch from the crippled skipper swung the game Ellons way. Two to win off the last ball, Howard made up for his earlier slack fielding and ran out Brown chasing two.
Ellon 164 all out, Banchory 163 for 9.
