Barrow, 8th February,
Unlimited Bangers Grand Slam
A slightly lower
than expected showing of 36 motors for this years Grand Slam meeting,
the Dahm Busters and the rest no shows all earning black marks for not
turning up. The material on offer was superb though with top Granadas
in the hands of 42 Steve Owen and 6 Paul Musgrove who both had Mk2
limos, the latters a used example whilst the best of the 6 Jags were
the returned Daimler 250 for 34 Mark Earnshaw plus the fresh XJ40 for
408 Steve Tyler while 62 Dave Eccles and 270 James Howard both had used
examples. Volvos numbered 10 including a 940 for 917 Derek Jones with
350 Dan Peel returning a DS420 limo. Moving up a gear two Yanks came
from 818 Craig Phillips with a Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon and running
mate 707 Lee Tomlinson had a rated Ford Country Squaire estate. Top car
honours though went to 310 John Nicholson with superb 6/110, in my eyes
the second best motor Barrow has seen behind only 684 Al Morphets
Armstrong Sidderley Whitley.
With
the field split 3 ways only 10 cars appeared for the opener but the
action came right at the start as 170 Gavin Howard attacked 325 Mark
Dempster but put himself in doing so and paid for it when he had 203
Russ McBain fired into him by 151 Steve Scurr wrecking the 170 motor in
good fashion. 303 Scott Dale then trashed Scurr with a stiff shot as
720 Matt Rogerson put himself in after a failed burial of 55 Graham
Smith. That was it action wise in the opener with 55 Smiggy showing
them the way from the hard chasing 514 Paul Woods, 720 Rog and 77 David
Patterson.
The
second was much better and started with an epic incident when 707 the
Meastro picked up 501 Ste Kaye and followed him superbly into a post,
30 Dougie Roberts providing much of the pushing power with 501 Basher
snapping and jacking impressively. 350 Danno and 217 Derek Moon now
went in which resulted in 30 Addict getting jacked and airbourne. 147
Chris Detton walled 74 Ste Waite on the back straight before weighing
into Moon only to be done by 34 Ernies Daimler and 14 Willy Walmsley as
810 Alex McBain blasted Ernie. 408 Tosh steamed 14 Sausage Boy as 05
Carlos Perez did 810 Rugrat before t-boning Moon hard next time round.
Tosh and Sausage Boy fought their ways through the pile with the result
in that order. We learnt that Carlos had broke his wrist in the hit on
Moon, hope it heals quickly Carlos.
Heat
3 was just as good as 62 Dave Eccles followed in 158 Dave Knight at the
start with 42 Donkey swift with some TNT revenge on the Bad Newz
captain with 59 Marc Blower also t-boning Eccles. 36 Turkey Birkett
fired up the back of Donkey before meeting the spun 818 Mr Bumps
Oldsmobile in a big head on which left him open to a massive shot from
270 James Howard destroying the Jaks R Us Volvo. Donkey now gave the
latter a big package and was steamed inturn by Blower as the yellows
came out to clear the track and extract Turkey from his epic wreck.
Down to 5 for the restart with the only action seeing Eccles run 917
NSD in which also caught Eno up doing the front wheel on the 6/110. 143
Sam Begley
going onto win from NSD and Eccles.
The
consi saw Addict follow in Rugrat from the off before Dale gave 270
Howard a big length of the straight shot, 203 Mad Russ turning it round
to hit Howard on oppo as the Meastro got stuck into 265 Ian Wallace
Jnr. Dale now collected the empty Rugrat motor as Demo had the Meastro
out, the Leveller giving the Yank a big shot next time round and the
Meastro recovered only to be taken out again by Demo, Dale again doing
the Jerky Boy captain before Demo did the Meastro which was sadly on
the centre and well after the reds as Dale had taken the win. Mad Russ
and Demo were loaded for their actions.
The final
was qualifiers only and drew only 9 cars as a result, Smiggy punting
Patterson into 143 Sam Begley which got the Gong Gang man some air
time. Tosh steamed Smiggy hard over the back wheel as Woods piled up
the back of Rog on the back straight, Sausage Boy taking the win and
the championship from NSD with no other finishers in a quiet race.
The DD drew
the best field of the day with 16 motors on track with Danno weighing
into Smiggy from the drop of the greens before Dale put himself in
allowing Woods to run him in, 143 Screamer then following in 158 Dave
Knight as Eno t-boned Sausage Boy and Woods again did Dale, Eno firing
up the back of the Invader captain as Rog piled up the back of the
Meastro on the back straight with the latter meeting Dale in a big head
on as a result. Demo now did the Meastro flat out on oppo which finally
nailed his hat on as the Addict steamed Woods and Smiggy did 434 Andrew
Burns over the front wheel. Eno kept the 6/110 going to steam the
Addict well in the entrance bend pile up as 434 Burnzy did Sausage Boy
over the back wheel, this finishing them both as Eno escaped from the
pile to take the win. This wrapped up another quality seassion around
Roosecote, some top wrecking and also one of the best Volvo wrecks of
all time for 36 Turkey.
