Originally a Saxon church, it was rebuilt in 1004. In 1636 it became part of Pembroke College, serving as the college chapel until 1732, when their present chapel was built. Of particular note are the three eastern bays and the vaulted crypt, dating from Edward III's time. The north aisle was built in 1455, and has an arcade of five arches from the Norman chancel. The font is decorated with lions and leaves at the foot, quatrefoils with faces on the body and with a frieze of angels' heads and wings above. The octagonal spire-shaped font cover is seventeenth century and decorated with paintings. The church has been known as St. Eldred's, St. Aldade's, St. Ald's, St. Old's, St. Olave's, St. Oolde's, St. Aldgate's and St. Toll's. The 14th century tower is shorter than the original, as the citizens were ordered to remove the top sections to prevent them dropping missiles on the students below.
