DANVILLE — Norma Evelyn Heim, 77, of Grandview Health Homes Inc., 49 Woodbine Lane, formerly of 307 Center St., Coal Township, died Saturday, Nov. 1, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, following an illness of seven years.
Born March 31, 1926, in Sunnyside, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Katie (Whary) Chaundy. Early in life, she resided in the Shamokin area. After her marriage, she moved to Trevorton and eventually relocated to Harrisburg. She returned to Coal Township in 1971, where she remained until 1996.
She attended Coal Township schools and was employed in many local dress factories as a seamstress/foreman. She also worked in a warehouse distribution center, restaurant business, cable company, several factories and a craft shop.
On Sept. 18, 1948, in Shamokin, she was married to Adrian Wesley Heim, who died on Jan. 28, 1998.
She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, Tharptown, where she was active in many church functions. She served on the PTA and was involved in school activities, using her seamstress abilities to make costumes for the Shamokin cheerleading squad and plays. She was active in the Republican party and the PAL organization (Police Athletic League), a group designed to keep intercity youth off the streets. She was a Bible school instructor for many years.
Her story was recently featured on television and newspapers throughout the region as the “face behind the closing of Goldstar Nursing Home.”
Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn A. and Eileen Heim, Shamokin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl A. and William Russell of Cochranville, and Debra J. and Thomas Tomcavage of Coal Township; five grandchildren, Glenn Heim Jr. of Coal Township, Brent Tomcavage of Scranton, Amber Tomcavage of Coal Township, Kurt Russell of Cochranville and Bryant Tomcavage of Coal Township; three sisters, Florence Hauck and Doris Tyler, both of Coal Township, and Shirley Shumberger of Boiling Springs; three brothers, Kenneth Chaundy of Mifflinburg RD, Robert Chaundy of Coal Township and Dennis Chaundy of Stonington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
