Beth Chaundy - Graduation

NORTHUMBERLAND -- The commencement service for the Northumberland Christian School was held June 1 at the Winfield Baptist Church. Fourteen students graduated from the school, which is a ministry of the First Baptist Church of Northumberland.

The valedictorian of the class of 2000 is Angela Long of Coal Township. She is the daughter of Gary and Barbara Long. Long will be attending Susquehanna University where she plans to major in physics. She served on the yearbook and formal committees at Northumberland Christian School and she is actively involved in the youth group at Mountainside Assembly of God Church.

The salutatorian of the class is Kim Conner of Lewisburg. She is the daughter of Rodney and Linda Conner. Conner is planning to major in elementary education at Baptist Bible College in the fall. She played basketball and soccer, served as a co-senior editor of the yearbook, and was secretary of her youth group at Reformed Baptist Church in Lewisburg.

Long and Conner were added to the school's "Alumni Honor Roll" for students maintaining a cumulative average between 93 and 96 percent. Allisa Persing of Snydertown was also added to the "Alumni Honor Roll." Other graduates were Jarett Lewis, Northumberland; Joseph Heintzelman, Kreamer; Kent Stroup, Richfield, Beth Chaundy, Sunbury; Mathew Patti, Sunbury; Brandon Wohlschlegel, Lewisburg; Andrea Geiger, Snydertown; Aaron Long, Coal Township; Daryl Stoltzfus, Winfield, Robert "Buddy" Yarger, Paxinos; and Kevin Heimbach, Selinsgrove.

Several students also received national recognition through the President's Awards for Educational Excellence. Students receiving the presidential awards were senior: Kimberly Conner, Angela Long and Alissa Persing; eighth graders, Lindsey Bingaman, Jonathan Daku, Brett Latsha, Brandie Moist, Jessica Poole and Bryan Stout; and sixth graders John Balducci, Lauren Dubendorf, Jamie Gessner and Matthew Gessner.

The commencement speaker was John Iamaio. Iamaio was formerly the pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Hummels Wharf and is currently a teacher at Webster Christian School in Webster, N.Y. The senior class sang an arrangement of "Blessed are They," and the students in grades seven through 12 sang three other anthems.

Northumberland Christian School, located in downtown Northumberland, was founded in 1972 and began graduating students from high school in 1978. More than 70 percent of its 226 graduates have gone on to four-year colleges and universities.
