ACCIDENTAL DEATH. - An inquest was held at Ascott- under-Wychwood on Friday last, before F. Westell, Esq., Coroner, on the body of George Smith, of Ascott, labourer, aged 52 years. It appeared that on Thursday last de- ceased was working for Mr. Chaundy, of Ascott, farmer, in a barn splitting beans by a machine worked by an engine. Mr. Chaundy was there, but while he was gone to put some buckets in the cistern house, deceased became entangled in the machine, and when Mr. Chaundy re- turned deceased was laid on the spindle of the machine quite dead. Blood was flowing from his mouth, and there was a scar on his head. Verdict, "Accidentally killed by his clothes becoming entangled in a bean crushing machine." | |

On Friday, Mr G. H. Dawkins, of Wilcote, en- tertained to supper the whole of the men and boys employed on the farms in the parishes of Leafield, Ascot and Wychwood; over which he shoots. The supper was held in the granary, at Farispeir, kindly lent for the occasion by C. Calvert, Esq. The guests numbered 70, and included Messrs. Hambridge (Ascot), W. Calvert (Langley), O. and T. Chaundy (Ascot), and Wolliams (High Lodge), gardener, whose efforts to give satisfaction were [sic] sided. The whole of the arrangements were in the hands of Mr. Hogg, Mr. Dawkins' genial gardener, whose efforts to give satisfaction were entirely successful. Mr. Hogg was, however, back- ed up most energetically by a number of willing helpers, in addition to the gentlemen mentioned, who assisted in carving the joints.... | |
