Children in Bishopthorpe
Education in Bishopthorpe
For Bishopthorpe Babies, and Mums... and little and
BIG kids!
The village has its own Playgroup, Infant School and Junior School. The
Junior School
and Playgroup
both have a website - And now so does the Infant
School. You can also find out more about them from the
City of York Schools web site, or the City Council's Education
website. Remember to click 'back' to return here! But
there's lots going on as well for new mothers and younger children:
TINY
MEET A MUM:
This is the first step for anyone who's just moved into the village, just left
work, got a new baby or just wants to meet someone different. Meetings are normally
on the first and third Wednesday of every month in St Andrew's Church Hall at
10.15. Don't be shy of just coming along. We've all been there!
A MOTHER AND BABY GROUP...
... meets in the Methodist Church Hall on Monday mornings in term-time, from 10:30
to 11:30. New Mums are always welcome, so just turn up.
BISHOTHORPE
PRE-SCHOOL PLAYGROUP:
A member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance, the playgroup meets for 8 sessions
a week. There is a mother and baby group (with paint!), a session for toddlers
aged 2 and a half to three (without mums) and a choice of mainstream sessions
for children over 3 until they move into the infant school. The professional staff
are employed by a voluntary committee of parents who run lots of fundraising and
social events to ease us back into the real world.
PRIMARY
The Infant and Junior schools are on separate sites but this doesn't seem to bother
the children at all, both schools work very closely together. They are both housed
in modern(ish) buildings with lots of green space. They are friendly places and
produce confident outgoing kids. The children seem to learn quite a lot there
too. Click here to visit the Archbishop
of Yorks Junior School Website.
SECONDARY
Once they reach eleven most children have always gone to Tadcaster
Grammer School. HOWEVER this may not always be so (there's a long story here
to do with county boundaries moving!). The latest information from the City Council
is that Bishopthorpe Jumior School will feed into Fulford School in York - starting
in September 2001. This is not confirmed and may yet be changed, so if you are
thinking of moving to Bishopthorpe and have secondary school-aged children, speak
to the York Education Office first (tel: (0)1904 613161 and ask for the " 'Educational
Services Customer Advice Centre' in George Hudson Street" - honest!).
TERTIARY
At 16 there are lots of choices... Tadcaster School has a Sixth Form (so does
Fulford I think) but a lot of children choose to go to York College which is within
easy walking distance (FREEDOM) and offers a huge range of courses. York College
is a new amalgamation of the York Sixth Form College and the York College of Further
and Higher Education (aka 'the tech'). Once out of there - the sky's the limit.
