BTEC National Diploma In Media Studies

What is the course about?

Core Subjects: Media Studies, Communications, Information Technology, Desktop Publishing, Media Workshop & Law. Options include Photography, Film Studies & Journalism.

How do you get in?

To get into the course you need a minimum of four GCSEs at a grade C or equivalent.

What is the course good for?

The course is good for people who are interested in the Media Business for example Advertising, Public Relations, Television, Radio or Publishing.

How long is the course?

This course is a 2 year course with 18 hours a week with 36 weeks per year.

Our course consists of 8 individual units

Writing for film and tv
In this unit you concentrate on things such as writing scripts for new televsion programmes, thinking of ways to make old televsion programmes up to date and interesting.

Working Practice
In this unit you concentrate on things like why the television companies put their programmes on at certain times and the different types of audiences there are and what type of programmes attract them.

Photography
In this unit you will concentrate on taking photos. You will learn how to use different lenes to get different effects on photos. You will also learn how to process your photos in black and white.

Media in context
In this unit you will concentrate on all of the legal side of Media Studies for example things like codes of practice. You will also find things out like who owns what and what you have to do to become a owner of a media company.

Moving Images
In this unit you will concentrate on films and their different genres. You will find out how film makers use lighting and cameras in different ways to portray an emotion or feeling of the character/characters.

Print Editing
This unit is all about journalism. You learn the difference between a news story, a hard news story and a human interest story. You learn how to write the different types of news stories and how to ask the right questions to get the type of story that you want.

IT
This is where you learn how to use all of the different types of computer packages that will help you do your work for each subject. You learn how to use packages such as Cool Edit, Asymmetrix, Permier, Photoshop and much much more. Also in this unite you will be given time to complete all of your written work for each unit. So if you do not have a computer at home there is no need to worry.

Media Workshop
In this unit you concentrate on doing technical things such as producing a radio station with interviews from people in the college, going out into Bexleyheath and interviewing people to make up a slot in a radio station.
