JOHN BARRYMORE - HAMLET, HAMLET'S GHOST AND OSCAR JAFFE.

CAROLE LOMBARD - LILY GARLAND

CHICAGO TRIBUNE (April 7 1934)  JOHN BARRYMORE and CAROLE LOMBARD were all set to take part in a radio audition for New York sponsers, the assignment being dialog from HAMLET.    The sponsers had a telephone wire cut through to New York, but when the announcer had finished introducing John the actor discovered, to his horror, that not only had he temporarily forgotten the lines, but that he had the wrong script in front of him.  Chagrin ensued all around, but in half an hour the audition hookup had again been arranged and this time everything was flawless.

John's original 16 page script which has two different page 3's and many pages of alterations and notes.  Above is page 2.

RUDY VALLEE AND THE SEALTEST PROGRAM - NBC

///

John was a regular on the Rudy Vallee Sealtest Program from the end of 1940 to the "infamous" 19 May 1942 rehearsal, where he collapsed and later died in hospital 10 days later.

The shows were basically all about Rudy and that week's particular guest star, making "fun" of John (although the guest star usually got a "beating" as well!) through a comedy sketch. Obviously, John mostly got ridiculed for women and drink!  However, Vallee didn't get off lightly as most jokes aimed at him centered on his stinginess and singing!

For John to be such a regular on this show  I can only presume it had a lot to do with him not having to remember his lines (without the aid of a script!!) and quite possibly, he actually enjoyed doing them!!
