Operation Quantum Force

[Residence One on Earth. The President's office. President Anders is behind the desk. An Aide enters]

AIDE: Sir the Liberator has been spotted leaving the Terminal system and it is believed they are heading for their rendezvous at the Stardust.
ANDERS: Excellent. Have the Quantum Force been alerted?
AIDE: They are on standby sir.
ANDERS: Good. Was there anything else?
AIDE: Yes sir. The scout ship which picked up Liberator allowed them to leave Terminal unchallenged and did not follow. The commander decided to land and investigate the reason the rebels had returned to that planet.
ANDERS: He found something?
AIDE: He found the body of Kerr Avon. Apparently the rebels buried him close to the old building complex on the planet.
ANDERS: So Avon is dead. Unfortunate.
AIDE: Unfortunate, sir?
ANDERS: Unfortunate that just when we want a cool, logical head in command on the Liberator he goes and gets himself killed. That unstable hot-head Blake might not react the way we anticipated.
AIDE: Shall I inform Smith sir?
ANDERS: No. I imagine he'll find out soon enough. Have Avon's body returned to Earth for a thorough examination. I want to know how he died.

[The Aide turns and leaves]

ANDERS: Rebels. Can't even trust them to stay alive when you want them to.

[Liberator teleport room. Blake is behind the controls with Soolin. Tarrant enters]

TARRANT: What do you want Blake?
BLAKE: Put your bracelet on. You're going on a little trip.
TARRANT: Blake I didn't take orders from Avon so what makes you think I'll take orders from you?
BLAKE: Because if you don't I'll teleport you down and not bring you back up again. Now go.
TARRANT: I'm not scared of your threats Blake.
BLAKE: I don't much care as long as you do as you're told. When you get down there find a bar called the Stardust Lounge. Apparently it used to be quite a select club but now it's a bit of a rough place.
TARRANT: What do I do when I get there?
BLAKE: Ask at the bar for a man named Smith. The bartender will point him out. Find out what he wants then come back up.
TARRANT: Who is he?
BLAKE: No idea, but according to our contacts with the warlords he's been trying to set up a meeting with us for some time. That kind of persistence, not to mention contacts, intrigues me.
TARRANT: If you're so intrigued why don't you go?
BLAKE: Because it could be a Federation trap.
TARRANT: So I walk into the trap while you sit safe up here.
BLAKE: Not quite. The last time I checked the most wanted figures with Orac I was at number three. Vila was at number seven and Soolin was twelve. You're somewhere below that and Kyben doesn't even register. If it is a trap they'll probably string you along in the hope of capturing more of us. If I went they'd shoot first and worry about the rest later.
TARRANT: I don't like this at all.
BLAKE: Fine but you can either teleport down or take the long way, out the airlock and through the atmosphere. Your choice.
TARRANT: [steps into the teleport area] Put me down.

[Blake teleports Tarrant]

SOOLIN: You shouldn't push him like that.
BLAKE: When I want your opinion I'll ask for it. He's... All of you are going to have to get used to doing as you're told over the next few months without arguing about everything.
SOOLIN: Just a minute Blake, we're all free agents. You can't just give orders and expect them to be obeyed without question.
BLAKE: I can, I do and they will be.

[The Stardust Lounge. The club displays the signs of once being fairly lavish but now it's clear the only attractions are the cheapness of the alcohol and the privacy afforded by the dim lighting. Tarrant enters and immediately attracts attention as the best dressed person present by several degrees. Several gazes linger on him sizing him up as a possible target. All gazes swing away when Tarrant subtly moves his jacket to show his gun. As everyone turns back to their drinks Tarrant approaches the barman]

TARRANT: I'm looking for a man named Smith.

[The barman nods towards a shadowy figure in a booth to one side. Tarrant crosses to join him]

SMITH: Couldn't you have dressed for the occasion. You stand out a mile like that.
TARRANT: Next time I'll wear the bright red number. You're Smith?
SMITH: I am. Sit down. [Tarrant does so] My employers are interested in discussing a temporary alliance with your leader.
TARRANT: Temporary? Who exactly are your employers?
SMITH: Lets just call them the Federation.
TARRANT: I'm leaving.

[Tarrant stands. Smith puts his hand on Tarrant's arm]

SMITH: Wait. I'm serious. Deadly serious.
TARRANT: What makes you think we'd be interested in an alliance with the Federation? In case you hadn't noticed we spend most of our time trying to destroy it.
SMITH: We recently learned of a grave threat not just to the Federation but everything.
TARRANT: Everything?
SMITH: I do not use the word lightly. I need to speak to Avon and I need to speak to him now. Besides I will not discuss this matter in an open place like this.
TARRANT: I'm going back to my ship. I'll be sure to mention what you said. If I'm not back in an hour the answer's no.

[Tarrant leaves]
[Liberator teleport room. Tarrant teleports in]

BLAKE: Well?
TARRANT: Smith works for the Federation.
BLAKE: Any trouble getting away?
TARRANT: None at all.
SOOLIN: I'm not surprised. Orac reported that all Federation security has been subtly moved out of the area for a mile around the bar.
BLAKE: What did he want?
TARRANT: He told me he was a Federation employee and he wants to speak with Avon.
SOOLIN: I assume you told him no.
TARRANT: I think he was under the mistaken impression that Avon led us.
BLAKE: Did he say anything else?
TARRANT: Only that there is a threat to everything. He did not use the word lightly.
BLAKE: I'm still intrigued. Take a spare bracelet and go get him.

[Tarrant collects a spare bracelet from the box and steps into the teleport area, all the while staring daggers at Blake. Blake teleports him down]

BLAKE: [into comm] Vila. Kyben. Report to the teleport room. Bring some weapons.

[The Stardust Lounge. Tarrant enters, walks over to Smith and hands him a teleport bracelet]

TARRANT: Put that on. [Smith does so. Into bracelet] Teleport.

[Tarrant and Smith teleport to the surprise of the people in the bar]
[Liberator teleport room. Tarrant and Smith appear. Smith is looking directly into the gun barrels of Blake, Soolin and Vila. Tarrant draws his gun and steps to one side]

BLAKE: Vila search him.

[Vila hands his gun to Soolin, steps forward and quickly searches Smith. He finds nothing except a computer data cylinder in Smith's pocket. He lays it on the teleport console and retrieves his gun]

SMITH: As you can see I am totally unarmed. Are all the guns really necessary?
BLAKE: Yes they are. You had something to say.
SMITH: Where is your leader?
BLAKE: I'm right here. A free bit of information for you to take back to your masters. Avon is dead.
SMITH: I see. How?
BLAKE: That's none of your business. So how about you explain what your business is.
SMITH: How about we continue this in more comfortable surroundings. I'm informed your flight deck is quite pleasant.
BLAKE: You can either talk here and now or we send you back to the planet. If you're lucky I might send you back still breathing.
SMITH: So much for trying to be friendly. I was sent here to contact you by the President himself because of a grave threat to the security of the galaxy, indeed the universe.
BLAKE: Forget the sales pitch, just tell us.
SMITH: About twenty-five years ago a man by the name of Vinder Drefus decided that Federation society was too evil to live in.
BLAKE: I like him already.
SMITH: Drefus gathered a small group of like-minded individuals around himself. Federation security kept an eye on them but they were considered harmless. They were idealistic and rebellion against the Federation was not their way. We even started to push other malcontents in their direction believing the group would control them for us. Eventually they started a small commune on the planet code named YU8. They called it Freedom.
BLAKE: So far I don't see the problem.
SMITH: The group began to turn into a cult. The members worshipped Drefus and obeyed his every whim. Unfortunately Drefus is mentally unstable. He started to believe that life was a disease of the universe and was making it unwell. We've linked his followers to several incidents of mass murder over the past ten years as they try to 'cleanse' the universe of it's disease.
BLAKE: So we have one nut who thinks life is a disease to be destroyed and a couple of hundred people who believe anything he says. Where's the great threat?
SMITH: Drefus's group attracted more than the discontented and outcasts from society. Two men joined him around the same time his group became killers. One was an incredibly rich man who could finance just about anything. The other is Professor Chrossis, the galaxy's leading expert in Space-Time folding.
KYBEN: What?
TARRANT: It's something the Federation did considerable research into some years ago. If I remember correctly the theory goes that you can bend the Space-Time dimensions in on themselves effectively allowing instantaneous transportation to any other point. Travel from where you are to anywhere, anytime in the universe.
SMITH: Correct. The technology was deemed too far advanced to be built and the effects too unstable. Unfortunately this is precisely the effect that Drefus hopes to create. Federation intelligence believes that Chrossis is close to making the technology work. Once activated his machine will unravel Space-Time in an area smaller than an atom. The effect will begin to gather pace and grow exponentially feeding on the energy released. An hour after activation the area will be roughly the size of an Earth orange. Two hours and the complex containing the machine will be gone. A couple of hours later and the planet is destroyed. In short the galaxy's lifespan can be measured in months. But the effect won't stop there. It'll keep growing until in about a century it has consumed the entire universe. Of course by then time won't mean anything because the effect will have consumed that too.
BLAKE: So in short everything gets destroyed unless we stop it.
SMITH: Yes, but you don't have to do it alone. I have a full squad of the Federation Quantum Strike Force assembled and ready to go on the planet below us. The main reason we need the Liberator is that its teleport will allow us to land our forces quickly and with a minimum of casualties. Apparently the cult has turned into an army and there are enough defensive weapons on the surface of the planet Freedom to shoot down any approaching ship.
TARRANT: Orbital bombardment?
SMITH: The complex is deep underground. We couldn't be sure of complete destruction. Besides our top specialists believe the device may already be operational, in a standby mode while Chrossis makes the final adjustments. An explosion might trigger it. We need to get a team inside the complex and shut it down before destroying it.
BLAKE: Which is where we come in.
SMITH: Not exactly. The Quantum Force will make the actual attack. We need the Liberator's cloaking device to give us the element of surprise and it's teleport to get through the defences in the planet's atmosphere and close enough to attack without heavy casualties.
BLAKE: You want to bring a squad of the Federation's best troops, armed to the teeth, onto the Liberator? How many are we talking about?
SMITH: A hundred.
TARRANT: A hundred? I don't think so.
BLAKE: Teleport him back down. I'll meet you tomorrow same time, same place.

[Soolin motions Smith back into the teleport with her gun, then pulls the lever teleporting him back to the planet]

TARRANT: It's a trick.
BLAKE: Perhaps. We'll consult Orac. Vila bring the data cylinder and lets see how plausible this 'trick' is.

[All exit]
[The Stardust Lounge. Smith is sitting at the same table as before. Blake, wearing different clothes, enters and sits across from him]

SMITH: Allies?
BLAKE: For now.
SMITH: What convinced you I was telling the truth?
BLAKE: It's my trusting nature. [Smith raises his eyebrows in disbelief] All right. I checked with Orac. What you described is theoretically possible. Not likely but possible. I also did some research on Vinder Drefus and his cult. Whether or not they can destroy the universe they're very dangerous and they give rebels a bad name, especially as the Federation keeps blaming their attacks on us. One of them on me personally.
SMITH: Sorry about that.
BLAKE: And of course we've been sitting in orbit for over a day now and no Federation ship has taken the slightest interest in us.
SMITH: Good. Now we really must get started.
BLAKE: There are some conditions.
SMITH: I thought there might be.
BLAKE: Your men will teleport up two at a time. They will arrive unarmed and remain that way until we are in position to attack. Their weapons will be transported to Liberator on our Sevener craft where they will be thoroughly scanned. Once on the ship your men will remain locked in the cargo holds. The only exceptions are yourself and the commanding officer who will be allowed out for strategy meetings. Any of your men found outside the cargo holds will be shot on sight. Any attempt to take over the ship and we'll open the holds to space, and take our chances hitting the target from orbit ourselves.
SMITH: Very well. Come with me and meet the troops.

[Federation barracks room. Twenty men are quartered here. They are finishing packing their gear. Smith leads Blake into the room]

SECTION LEADER: Attention.

[The men snap to attention]

TROOPER 1: [under his breath] Officer and a traitor.
BLAKE: [approaching trooper 1] Apparently you think there's something wrong with my loyalties. There is nothing wrong with my hearing.
TROOPER 1: No.
SECTION LEADER: No, sir.
TROOPER 1: I will not say sir to a traitor, section leader.
BLAKE: You consider me a traitor. Well I consider you a mass murdering butcher who I will take great delight in gunning down at the appropriate time. [Raises his voice] Listen all of you, and pass it along to the rest. We're not friends, we're not comrades in arms. I like you even less than you like me. For the moment we're allies. We'll work together as we need to. Any of you want to make comments about me, my ship or my crew can do so. Just make sure I don't hear them. On my ship I am in command. Anyone forgets that and they will not survive the mistake. [To Trooper 1] If you don't want to come say so now. I'd hate to ruin the good will by killing you before we start.

[Blake strides from the room, followed by Smith]
[A small office. Captain Johnson is sitting behind the desk. Blake and Smith enter]

SMITH: Nij Blake this is...
BLAKE: Captain Johnson.
SMITH: Ah, yes. He will command the soldiers in the ground assault while I act as your liaison.
BLAKE: Captain.
JOHNSON: So you're Blake. I thought you'd be taller. Most disappointing.
BLAKE: Ah humour. How to diffuse a potentially difficult situation. [Johnson smiles] For beginners. [Johnson's smile fades slightly] I think we'll get along okay.
JOHNSON: Really? I thought you'd hate me from the start.
BLAKE: I read your service record, captain. Top of your class at the F.S.A. Fast tracked into officer grade. Then you wrecked your career by refusing to fire on a civilian passenger ship carrying two wanted rebels, in direct violation of your orders. You were court martialed and dishonourably dismissed the service. Returned to active duty during the Galactic War you assumed command of a pursuit flotilla when your captain was killed in action. Your flotilla was instrumental in keeping the alien ships off the Liberator long enough for Avon to score a decisive hit on the enemy command ship. Your ship was one of the few survivors of the battle. Since then you've bounced around from post to post as an acting captain until you were picked for this mission, and given a promotion to full captain. Did I leave anything out?
JOHNSON: Not much.
BLAKE: You were chosen captain because of your record. Your superiors believe I will trust you because you refused to fire on civilians and because you saved my ship in the Galactic War.
JOHNSON: My orders are to lead my men in attacking the target on YU8 and then to return to base allowing you and your ship to go in peace. I will carry out those orders to the best of my ability.
BLAKE: You'll do. Lets get started.

[Liberator flight deck. Blake is at the pilot's console. Vila is sleeping at the weaponry console. Smith is seated in the pit. Kyben sits opposite him. Johnson enters, followed by Tarrant and Soolin]

TARRANT: They're all sealed in the cargo decks.
SOOLIN: I'll get back down there and keep an eye on them.
BLAKE: Keep your communicator on at all times. Anything happens and we'll be there to back you up.

[Soolin leaves]

SMITH: Now that that's out of the way can we get to work planning this attack.
BLAKE: By all means. Vila wake up.

[Blake nudges Vila awake]

VILA: What do you want?
BLAKE: We may have need of your special skills. We are after all trying to break into somewhere that's supposed to be impregnable.
JOHNSON: Indeed. My basic plan is to teleport my men in halfway up the mountainside and attack downhill towards the entrance at the foot of the mountain. Federation intelligence believes you can't accurately teleport through solid rock into caves unless you have an accurate fix.
BLAKE: They're right.
JOHNSON: We'll be outnumbered and outgunned so we'll need the element of surprise to succeed. Hopefully if we land quickly enough and concentrate our fire we can break through their defences and enter the mountain complex itself. There are no plans of the complex so from then on we have to improvise.
BLAKE: There's a flaw. The teleport. We don't have enough bracelets to land all your men together and even if we did the Liberator can't handle that many at the same time. We're going to be limited to sending twenty down at once. When they're down someone will have to collect their bracelets and return to the ship for the next group. It will take a minimum of half an hour to land all your men. By that time they'll have lost the element of surprise and probably be well on their way to being wiped out.
JOHNSON: That is a problem.
SMITH: Any ideas? You are the experts on teleporting into danger.
VILA: You need be a pickpocket.
TARRANT: What?
VILA: If you're trying to lift something from someone ideally you need a distraction. You can bump into them, wave your other hand around to distract them, get an accomplice to...
TARRANT: He means create a diversion.
BLAKE: This planet has orbital defences. There's a good chance most of them'll be watching the pretty flashes as Liberator gets shot up.
VILA: Not enough.
BLAKE: You have something in mind?
VILA: Not really. I just know a few lights in the sky won't be enough.
BLAKE: Tarrant, how do you feel about being a distraction?
TARRANT: You're giving me a choice this time?
BLAKE: No. You'll take Sevener down to the planet and attack those defences at ground level while we land Captain Johnson and his men. Once they're spotted you'll come back up here and protect the ship.

[Teleport room. The room is full of crates of weapons. Blake is checking through the crates and is currently holding a new design Federation rifle. Johnson enters followed by Soolin]

JOHNSON: Admiring the guns, Blake?
BLAKE: Not bad.
JOHNSON: May I?

[Johnson holds out his hand and Blake hands him the gun. Soolin tenses]

SOOLIN: Blake, are you...
BLAKE: We're going to give them weapons sooner or later Soolin. Besides he's not going to try taking on both of us at once. Are you?
JOHNSON: Definitely not. [turns the gun in his hand] Beautiful isn't it. The new multiple mode assault rifle. The latest development by the Federation Weapons Research Division. You can change the way the gun fires just by inserting a different clip. Laser, plasma bullet, drug, grenade whatever you want.

[Johnson ejects the clip and hands it to Blake. Blake smiles and draws his handgun. He ejects the clip and inserts the Federation version]

BLAKE: They didn't even bother to change the size.
JOHNSON: What?
BLAKE: These guns were actually developed by a man named Dorian. Avon killed him several years ago and the guns were part of the equipment we inherited. Servalan got her hands on a couple and the Weapons Division reverse engineered them. I'm surprised it took them this long to start producing them.
JOHNSON: We stole them from you?
SOOLIN: That's right.
BLAKE: One thing I did want to ask. [Blake puts his gun away and picks up a long-bladed knife] What's this for?
JOHNSON: It's called a bayonet. It's quite effective for covert actions. Not as noisy as a gunshot and there's no flash to alert anyone. These also have a laser saw built in. You press the button on the handle and the bayonet generates a laser along the knife edge. It'll cut through virtually anything. Some of the men prefer them to guns.
BLAKE: Sounds nasty.
JOHNSON: Oh it is. Most soldiers don't use them, they think bayonets are a relic of the past. The Quantum Force is trained in every form of combat there is. A couple of them can ride Earth horses and shoot at the same time.
BLAKE: I'm sure that's a useful skill.
JOHNSON: It might be one day. But not today. I came to tell you we need to start arming my men.
SOOLIN: We'll be in teleport range in a couple of hours. Tarrant has just reduced speed and activated the cloaking device.
BLAKE: Then let's do this. [pause] One thing. Why are you called the Quantum Force?
JOHNSON: You're aware of the ancient quantum theory? Small changes have big effects?
BLAKE: I've heard of it.
JOHNSON: That's us. We fight the small scale battles. The ones that really make a difference.
BLAKE: We have more in common than I thought.

[Johnson puts the gun away and they all leave the teleport room]
[Liberator flight deck. Blake alone until Smith enters escorted by Soolin]

SMITH: You wanted me?
BLAKE: In a little over an hour we'll be launching an attack on something that I only have you word is hostile.
SMITH: My word has been good so far.
BLAKE: I'm going with the strike team.
SMITH: That sounds dangerous. If you get killed I wouldn't imagine your friends would be too happy.
SOOLIN: Probably not. Most of us anyway.
BLAKE: I'm not going to be happy if this is all a set up. I'm going to make sure you were telling the truth.
SOOLIN: Blake, if he is lying what are you going to do about it? Slaughter one hundred of the Federation's best men? You're good Blake but no one's that good.
BLAKE: I don't like the idea of sitting up here while they might be attacking innocent people.
SOOLIN: It's a bit late for that. We either pull out now or go all the way. Planning to change your mind halfway is never a good idea.
BLAKE: I'm going.
SOOLIN: You're staying. We need you on the ship for when they come back.
SMITH: Or is it that you just don't trust my men to do the job right?
BLAKE: I don't trust the Federation to do anything right. Besides most of their troops can't hit a spaceship at five paces.
SMITH: The Quantum Force is the best there is. Some of them are probably better than you.
BLAKE: Hope you never find out. [to Soolin] All right i'll stay on the Liberator. For now.

[Liberator cargo hold. The hold has been turned into a temporary barracks room. Sleeping bags lay in neat rows along the sides. The Quantum Force troopers are gathered in the centre of the room. Johnson is standing in the middle of the group. Kyben is beside him]

JOHNSON: Listen up. Were almost at the target. You've all been briefed on the plan but let's go over it one more time. In theory it's impossible to land large numbers of troops on a mountainside quickly enough to attack and take well-prepared positions. So that's what we're going to do. The Sevener will make several flybys and attack the cultists on the west side of the entrance to the mountain. We will teleport in four groups of twenty to a position just above the entrance. E squad will remain on the Liberator as backup.
KYBEN: There are only twenty bracelets so the first thing you do after landing is put them in the box and return them to the Liberator for the next group.
JOHNSON: Once we're all in position we will attack down the mountain hopefully achieving total surprise. Once we enter the mountain it's standard building clearance. Primary target is the space-time machine. It must be secured at all costs. Secondary target is Professor Chrossis. Eliminate on sight. All other enemy personnel are expendable. You don't have time to take prisoners. These people are fanatics, odds are you won't be able to anyway. Kyben.
KYBEN: Each of you is wearing a locator beacon. Whoever finds the machine activate the beacon. It'll give us a good enough lock to teleport.
JOHNSON: Our two specialists will teleport down and make sure the machine is safe. Once it is they'll destroy it with explosives. You remain with them and protect them, with your lives if necessary. They'll have bring spare bracelets to get you back to the Liberator. Make no mistake everyone, as soon as that machine is safe it blows. Anyone still inside the mountain goes with it. So get out fast. Let's go do our jobs.

[Johnson and Kyben leave. The troopers grab their gear and follow]
[Liberator flight deck. Blake and Smith are watching the screen. A planet is slowly growing larger]

BLAKE: How long Zen?
ZEN: Orbit of planet YU8 will be achieved in four point seven minutes.
BLAKE: Activate the battle computers and standby the force wall. [into comm] Get ready Tarrant.

[Orbit of YU8. Liberator suddenly appears as the cloaking device shuts down. Sevener is briefly visible leaving the Liberator cargo hold before the cloak hides it again. Two orbital defence satellites start shooting at the Liberator]
[Liberator teleport room. Kyben is behind the console. Twenty Federation troopers are grabbing weapons from the gun crates and slotting in clips. Soolin is covering them with her gun]

VILA: [over comm] Bring me up.

[Vila teleports in holding a box of bracelets. He puts the box down and watches as the troopers each grab a bracelet and move into the teleport area]

VILA: Put us down.

[Kyben teleports the troopers and Vila]
[Liberator flight deck. Blake and Smith are watching the satellites on the screen as they continue to fire at the Liberator]

KYBEN: [over comm] Second team away.
BLAKE: [into comm] Hurry it up. We can't take this pounding forever.
SMITH: How long?
BLAKE: A few minutes.

[Surface of the planet YU8. Johnson and his troops are concealed on a hillside looking down at a group of cultists in a trench who are firing at Sevener as it flies overhead. Another twenty troops appear and duck into cover. They quickly hand their bracelets over to Vila who teleports out]
[Sevener flight deck. Tarrant is fighting the controls while smoke pours from several panels]

TARRANT: [into comm] Blake i'm getting out of here. The ship can't take any more.

[Hillside. As Sevener speeds away up into space the cultists stand and cheer. They are therefore an easy target as Johnson and his men attack them from behind]
[Liberator flight deck]

ZEN: Extensive damage to the upper hull. Auto-repair is operating.
JOHNSON: [over comm] Liberator come in.
BLAKE: [into comm] Blake here.
JOHNSON: [over comm] We've cleared the defences around the entrance.
BLAKE: [into comm] Good. The ship took some hits to the hull but no major damage to the vital systems. We're hitting the orbital defence satellites now. Hopefully they'll be gone by the time you're ready to come back up. I don't want to lower the force wall with them still operational.
JOHNSON: [over comm] We have a problem of our own. The entrance opens into a tunnel fifty metres long with no cover. The cult have a barricade at the end and a lot of men with guns. We can't get down the tunnel.
BLAKE: [into comm] I'm coming down to join you.
JOHNSON: [over comm] Okay. Quantum Force out.

[Liberator teleport room. Vila is seated behind the console. Two injured troopers are being helped from the teleport by their companions from E squad. Kyben is running checks on them. Soolin is still standing guard. Blake runs in]

BLAKE: Vila get ready. Kyben leave them and operate the teleport.
KYBEN: I leave them they could die.
BLAKE: All right. Soolin operate the teleport. [to troopers] Get ready. Vila get ready.
VILA: What do you need me for?
BLAKE: They're having trouble breaking in. Let's go. [Blake drags Vila into the teleport area. Into bracelet] Smith, shut down the force wall.

[Mountain. Blake and Vila teleport in close to Johnson. A fierce firefight is going on between the Federation troopers at the tunnel mouth and the cultists fifty metres inside. Blake takes a quick look inside almost getting his head blown off in the process]

JOHNSON: Doesn't look good.
BLAKE: [grins] Never send a Federation trooper to do a rebel's job.
JOHNSON: Blake, wait.

[Blake draws his second gun and charges into the tunnel firing grenades and plasma bullets. He has barely gone five feet when he is forced to the ground by the returning fire]

JOHNSON: [shouts and points at two men] Go.

[The two troopers dash into the tunnel as the others pour covering fire from the sides of the tunnel. One is shot before he reaches Blake but the other succeeds in dragging Blake from the tunnel. Another trooper at the tunnel mouth is hit as he tries to keep up the covering fire. Blake is dragged to the side and sat down. Johnson kneels next to him and grabs his arm. Blake winces in pain]

JOHNSON: You were hit.
BLAKE: I'll live. It was just a graze.
JOHNSON: What the hell was that? You can't just charge into gunfire.
BLAKE: Nothing ventured... [grins]
JOHNSON: You got two of my men killed getting you out of that mess. What's the matter? You thought you could succeed where eighty highly trained soldiers couldn't. Wake up Blake.

[Back at the tunnel entrance Vila slips a metal cylinder into the barrel of a Federation rifle and hands it to a trooper. The trooper fires into the tunnel. There is no noticeable effect]

BLAKE: Vila what are you doing?
VILA: I just fired one of the trooper's locator beacons down the tunnel. You know the beacon which gives you a teleport lock.
BLAKE: So we can teleport straight to it? Behind the barricade?
JOHNSON: Works for me. Let's go.
BLAKE: Oh no. This one's mine.
JOHNSON: Blake, I just told you...
BLAKE: I'm wearing a bracelet. You're not.
JOHNSON: Good point.
BLAKE: One thing. Could I borrow a gun? I seem to have dropped mine.

[Tunnel behind the barricade. Blake teleports in where Vila's beacon dropped which luckily is behind a second barricade ten metres back from the first. He is armed with a Federation rifle and quickly wipes out the defenders behind the first barricade as they are pinned against it with no cover]
[Inside the mountain complex. The troopers race through clearing room after room. Blake, Johnson and Vila are standing together in a corridor when a bleeper goes off in Johnson's pocket]

JOHNSON: Someone's activated a beacon. They've found the machine.

[Lab. Two troopers and the two specialists are watching through a glass window. A man inside the room is pressing buttons and pulling levers. Blake, Johnson and Vila run in. Blake has retrieved his own guns]

JOHNSON: What's happening?
TROOPER 2: He was sealed inside when we got here. There's a force screen around the lab. We tried blasting our way in but it was no good.
SPECIALIST 1: He's activating the machine. It's powering up.
BLAKE: Vila can you get us through that screen?
VILA: If you've got a spare couple of hours.

[The man stops working and approaches a comm unit on the wall]

BLAKE: Something tells me we don't.
DREFUS: I am Vinder Drefus and I have finally beaten you. The curse of life will be lifted from the universe.
BLAKE: Something to remember about curing disease. The patient is supposed to survive.
DREFUS: Sometimes the sickness is too severe. Sometimes the kindest thing to do is put the patient out of its misery.
BLAKE: Vila get us in there.
SPECIALIST 1: It's too late. Look. [holds up a portable scanner with a confusing array of lines on it] The effect has started. We're too late.
JOHNSON: No way. [into comm] All troopers this is maximum priority. Do not evacuate the complex. Professor Chrossis must be capture alive and unharmed. I say again, capture of Professor Chrossis is maximum priority. [to Blake] If anyone knows how to stop this it'll be him.
BLAKE: Meanwhile. Vila get that force screen down.

[Liberator flight deck. Soolin is at the weapons console firing at the satellites. There is an explosion on the screen]

SOOLIN: At last. Orbital defences cleared.

[Lab. A Section Leader enters followed by two troopers dragging Chrossis between them. He looks a little battered]

SECTION LEADER: The Professor sir. You said unharmed, I hope you didn't mean unbruised sir.
JOHNSON: That's all right Section Leader. You troopers get the rest of the men out of here and back to the Liberator. Leave ten behind to guard this place.
SECTION LEADER: Yes sir. You heard the Captain. Move.

[The troopers leave. The Section Leader takes up a guard position by the door]

BLAKE: Professor your friend the lunatic has just sentenced the universe to death. You're going to tell me how to stop it or i'm going to spend whatever time I have left making your life unpleasant. And believe me I can make it very unpleasant.
CHROSSIS: He did it. He really did it. I didn't think this would happen.
BLAKE: You didn't think it'd happen. You built the machine. What did you think would happen?
CHROSSIS: I only wanted to continue my research. The potential of space-folding technology is unlimited and the Federation cancelled the project. They threw my life's work away like it was nothing. Drefus offered me a way to carry on, money, equipment, whatever I needed. I could have given him what he wanted months ago but i've been stringing him along, carrying on the work, making new discoveries.
DREFUS: You little worm. It's because of people like you the universe must perish.
BLAKE: Why don't you step out here and kill him yourself? [to Chrossis] Did one of these new discoveries include a way of stopping a universe destroying wave?
JOHNSON: Speaking of which.

[Blake and everyone turns to look at a small white patch of light inside Chrossis' machine. A black dot appears in the centre of the white]

JOHNSON: I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.
VILA: I got it. The shield's down.
BLAKE: Good.

[Blake fires a shot at the glass which shatters. Blake steps into the inner lab. Drefus backs away]

DREFUS: You can't stop it. You can't stop it.

[Blake holsters his gun and hits Drefus on the nose. A punch to the stomach follows. Blake grabs hold of Drefus and throws him back against the machine. He is caught by the effect and screams]

DREFUS: Ah help me. I'm being torn apart.
BLAKE: You should have thought about that before you condemned the rest of the universe to the same fate. [turns to Professor Chrossis] Think of something by the time it finishes eating him alive or you're next.
CHROSSIS: A counter wave.
BLAKE: What?
CHROSSIS: A counter wave. A wave exactly the same as this one but it's mirror image. It's like the theory of anti-sound. You broadcast a wave on the exact same frequency and amplitude and all you get is silence.
BLAKE: That sounds extremely difficult.
CHROSSIS: About as hard as destroying the universe, but i've already started doing that.
BLAKE: What do you need?
CHROSSIS: A very big power source, a computer to calculate the variables and that box.

[Chrossis points to a component of the machine. Blake and Johnson quickly tear it out of the machine, careful not to touch the growing white area or the still writhing Drefus]

BLAKE: What is this?
CHROSSIS: The heart of the machine. The rest was for my experiments. This is all we need to generate the wave.
JOHNSON: What about power?
CHROSSIS: I don't know.
BLAKE: [into comm] Liberator come in.

[Liberator flight deck]

SOOLIN: [into comm] Soolin here.
BLAKE: [over comm] Have the detectors picked up any large energy sources on the planet?
SOOLIN: [into comm] There's a geo-thermal station about forty miles from your position. Looks like Drefus' people built over a natural volcano. I was targeting it with the blasters.
BLAKE: [over comm] Teleport us there immediately.
VILA: [into Blake's bracelet] I'm coming back to the ship.
BLAKE: [into comm] Then get down there with Orac.
SOOLIN: [into comm] Orac?
BLAKE: [over comm] Yes Orac. I can either explain or we can save the universe. Now move.

[Lab. Blake hands Chrossis a bracelet]

BLAKE: Put that on. [Chrossis does. Into bracelet] Teleport.

[Geo-thermal station. Blake, Johnson, the two specialists, Chrossis, the Section Leader and three troopers teleport in. They immediately come under fire from cultists guarding the station. One of the specialists is killed before he can find cover. Blake, Johnson, the Section Leader and the troopers all fire back]

JOHNSON: [into bracelet] Liberator, we're under attack. Send E squad down immediately.

[The battle rages for several seconds before E squad teleports in. Several are killed instantly in the crossfire but the rest attack. This allows Soolin to teleport in, put Orac down and help finish off the cultists]

JOHNSON: [to Soolin] Impressive. If you ever feel like a change of career...
SOOLIN: I won't call you.
BLAKE: [to Chrossis] Get to work. [To Specialist 1] Help him.

[Liberator flight deck. The last group of troopers teleport in. As they step out Soolin, the specialist, the Section Leader and Johnson teleport in]
[Geo-thermal station. Chrossis is crouched by the machine which has been linked into the station's power outputs]

ORAC: Frequencies are matched.
CHROSSIS: All set.
BLAKE: Do it.

[Blake picks up Orac. Chrossis throws the final switch]

BLAKE: [into comm] Teleport.

[Liberator teleport room. Blake and Chrossis teleport in. Soolin is behind the console. Johnson, the Section Leader and three troopers are also present]

BLAKE: Where are the rest of the troopers?
SOOLIN: Seven are injured. They're in the medical unit with Kyben. The rest are disarmed and sealed in the holds.
BLAKE: Good. Lets go. We can monitor from the flight deck.

[They all run from the room]
[Liberator flight deck. Smith, Vila and Tarrant are present. Blake runs in carrying Orac and leading Soolin, Chrossis, Johnson, the Section Leader and three Quantum Force troopers]

BLAKE: Status?
TARRANT: The rift is still growing. The counter wave is also growing but too slowly to cancel it out.
BLAKE: Chrossis. Orac. Any suggestions, hypotheses or educated guesses now's the time to make them.
CHROSSIS: I'm out of ideas.
ORAC: I can offer no theories with a high probability of success. By its very nature this problem is highly theoretical and so...
BLAKE: Anything useful to say at all other than I don't know?
TARRANT: Wait a minute. Orac the rate the two waves grow at is directly proportional to the energy they receive correct?
ORAC: At a simple level yes.
TARRANT: Could we feed energy to the counter wave in order to make it grow faster?
ORAC: It is theoretically possible. However...
BLAKE: We have a plan.
ORAC: However the energy output required would be huge.
BLAKE: A missile blast.
ORAC: Not enough.
TARRANT: How about if we fire every missile in the banks?
ORAC: Possibly, however the energy from such an explosion would also reach the rift although obviously at a lower level.
BLAKE: Have you got any better ideas?
ORAC: No.
CHROSSIS: No.
BLAKE: Anyone? [looks around. Everyone shakes their heads] Then let's do it. Battle stations.

[The Liberator crew move to their consoles. The Federation personnel sit in the pit]

TARRANT: [from the pilot console] I'm moving us away from the planet and out to maximum missile range.
BLAKE: Zen put up the radiation shields and the force wall. Load the missile banks.
VILA: [from weapons] Targeting the counter wave. Locked in.
SOOLIN: Co-ordinates confirmed.
ZEN: Maximum firing range will be reached in point five minutes.
BLAKE: Everyone hang on. This might be a little rough.

[Everyone watches the screen as the planet recedes from view]

TARRANT: Range in ten seconds.
BLAKE: Get ready. [wait] Vila, fire.

[Liberator fires a volley of six missiles from it's missile tubes. There is a brief pause and then six more are fired, followed a few seconds later by six more]
[Planet surface. The first six missiles hit destroying most of the planetary surface. A brief glimmer can be seen as the counter wave grows rapidly. The second wave of missiles hits doing more damage and virtually destroying about a quarter of the planet. The third volley explode a few seconds later but the explosion is absorbed by both the rift and the counter wave which finally meet and interact. There is a sudden flash of light]
[Liberator flight deck. Everyone is staring at the screen]

TARRANT: Orac?
ORAC: The operation was successful.
SMITH: The rift is destroyed?
ORAC: No.
BLAKE: What?
ORAC: In order to destroy the rift completely the counter wave would have had to be perfectly matched and contain exactly the same energy. This was not the case. However the match was close enough to slow the expansion of the rift considerably.
BLAKE: How considerably?
ORAC: I estimate the rift will reach the size of a planet at approximately the same time as the universe uses up the last of it's hydrogen and all the stars burn out.
TARRANT: I can live with that.
SECTION LEADER: But possibly not much longer.

[The Section Leader and the three troopers level their weapons at Blake and the crew]

JOHNSON: What are you doing Section Leader?
SECTION LEADER: I'm taking command of this ship. Oh and one more thing.

[He draws his bayonet and stabs Chrossis in the stomach. The Professor collapses]

SECTION LEADER: Anyone tries to help him, i'll kill them. He's too dangerous to be allowed to live.
JOHNSON: These aren't our orders.
SECTION LEADER: Not yours. You're relieved of command.
JOHNSON: You can't do that, Section Leader. [emphasises "Section Leader"]
BLAKE: He just did.
JOHNSON: What?
SECTION LEADER: Shut up rebel traitor.

[Blake ignores him, steps down from his console and walks round to stand in front of Johnson]

BLAKE: Isn't it obvious? They picked you for this mission because you're as close as the Federation gets to an honourable man. Him [indicates the Section Leader] they picked because he isn't. They told you to destroy the cult and then leave the Liberator peacefully. Him they told to keep himself alive and when the mission was over, seize control of both the Quantum Force and the Liberator.
JOHNSON: [to the Section Leader] Is this true? [The Section Leader laughs. Johnson turns to Smith] Is it?
SMITH: Of course it is. You really thought the Federation would pass up an opportunity like this.
BLAKE: Don't feel too bad. Lying and betrayal is what the Federation is all about. Oh sorry, you've spent your whole life serving the Federation. You can feel really bad.
SECTION LEADER: Let's get the rebels locked up.

[Johnson draws his gun and aims at the Section Leader's head]

JOHNSON: Put the gun down Section Leader.
SECTION LEADER: What are you doing?

[Blake walks to the pit and sits down, giving every impression of getting comfortable for the duration]

JOHNSON: My orders were to destroy the cult, prevent the destruction of the universe, and allow the Liberator and it's crew to go in peace. I will not disobey those orders. No one ordered me to bring you back alive.
SECTION LEADER: Think about this, captain. You are threatening to kill one of your own men to save a group of traitors and rebels.
JOHNSON: I'm obeying my orders and stopping a mutineer.
SECTION LEADER: Kill me and you'll die along with the rebels.

[A trooper swings his gun to cover Johnson. Blake and Soolin react instantly, both drawing their guns. The remaining two troopers are dead before they know what is happening. Johnson and the Section Leader try to fire but their guns don't work. Blake kills the Section Leader. The trooper who swung to cover Johnson also tries to fire but his gun also fails. He is hit by blasts from both Soolin and Tarrant and falls lifeless. Smith also falls, killed by Blake. Blake steps up and takes Johnson's gun from him]

BLAKE: Thanks for the help.
JOHNSON: [appears shocked] Help?
BLAKE: You were a useful distraction.
JOHNSON: A distraction. What happened to our guns?
BLAKE: A little insurance policy. It's useful to know exactly how these guns work. For example you can insert a tiny circuit inside the gun and it stops it working if it receives a signal from a transmitter. Or more to the point this transmitter. [Blake pulls a transmitter from the under the flight console]
TARRANT: You mean we just killed a bunch of men who were effectively unarmed?
BLAKE: That's right. [to Johnson] Now what do I do with the rest of your men? [moves to the pit console]
JOHNSON: What about my men?
BLAKE: I told you that any attempt to take the ship and I'd open the cargo holds and flush them out into space.
JOHNSON: You can't. They had nothing to do with this.
BLAKE: No. All right we'll deliver you all back to Federation space as planned, but any further trouble and I will open the hold to space.
JOHNSON: There won't be any more trouble.
BLAKE: One more thing. I'm keeping all the weapons and equipment you brought on board. Call it a fine for bad behaviour.
JOHNSON: That wasn't the deal.
BLAKE: Neither was what just happened here.
JOHNSON: I don't have a choice do I?
BLAKE: No. One more thing. If I were you I wouldn't report what happened here. Trying to gun down your own men isn't a career highlight even in the Federation military.
JOHNSON: You're suggesting I lie.
BLAKE: Yes.
