In the Air Training Corps every cadet has a classification. Classification and Ranks are different things, to get a classification you must sit an exam based on a series of subjects which you would have already studied, but ranks are given based on merit. There are five classifications: 2nd Class, 1st Class, Leading, Senior and Staff. After passing an exam a cadet is given a badge to put on the brassard as proof.

2nd Class

This classification is given to every cadet upon enrolment. There is no badge for this classification so the brassard remains bare.

1st Class

The First Class exam is made up of seven subjects: First aid, basic Airmanship, expedition training, the history of the Royal Air Force, the history of the Air Training Corps, communications and weapon handling. The exam is very easy and most cadets pass in their first attempt. The badge for this classification is shown above.

Leading

Once a cadet has passed the First Class exam he or she is eligible to begin Leading cadet training. There are only three subject to study, which include basic navigation, principles of flight and Airmanship. Exams are set by Headquarters Air Cadets. The badge for this classification is shown above.

Senior

A cadet has to study two subjects for this exam, but is able to choose out of the subjects on offer: Air navigation, Propulsion, Aircraft handling and Advanced radio and radar. Again the exam is set by Headquarters Air Cadets. The badge for this classification is shown above.

Staff

There are two parts to this exam. This first is similar to the senior exam two subject: Pilot navigation, Airframes, Operational flying and Satellite communications must be chosen and studied. This part of the exam is set by Headquarters Air Cadets. The second part is completed in the squadron and your Wing staff officer assesses you on your knowledge of the Corps and your lecture technique. This time there is no badge but a yellow lanyard to worn on the left arm.
