The Air Training Corps also has a series of Adult ranks that normal civilians can obtain. They are Adult Warrant Officer Pilot Officer, Flying Officer, Flight Lieutenant, Squadron Leader and Wing Commander.
Adult Warrant Officer

Most squadrons will have an Adult Warrant Officer. The role of an Adult Warrant Officer on a squadron is drill and discipline. Adult Warrant Officers do not hold a commission, so they are not saluted, but they are called Sir or Ma'am.
Pilot Officer

Pilot Officer is the rank held by a newly commissioned officer. Holding this rank usually means that you are the Squadrons second in command [2IC].
Flying Officer

Promotion to this rank is usually made after being a Pilot Officer for two years. Again while holding this rank you are usually the squadron 2IC.
Flight Lieutenant

When a Squadron need a new Squadron Commander then a person holding the rank of Flying Officer will be promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant. AT this point the person will become the Squadron Commanding Officer [CO].
Squadron Leader

Squadron Leaders usually do not hold the responsibility of being a CO. By this rank they now have a role to play at Wing level.
Wing Commander

Wing Commander is the highest rank possible rank in the Voluntary Reserve [Training] section of the Royal Air Force [also known as the ATC officer ranks]. Once given this rank the person is given the responsibility of commanding a Wing.
Normal or retired Royal Air Force Officers take all other ranks.
